CRBA (Consular Report of Birth Abroad) Requirements Breakdown
1. Child’s Birth Certificate
Required: Original long-form birth certificate showing both parents’ names.
If not in English: An informal translation must be provided.
2. U.S. Citizen Parent’s Proof of Citizenship and Identity
Required: Most recent U.S. passport.
Alternatively, one of the following:
U.S. birth certificate
Certificate of Citizenship
Certificate of Naturalization
3. Non-U.S. Citizen Parent’s Identification
Required: Passport or another government-issued photo ID.
If not in English: An informal translation is needed.
4. Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
Required: Original marriage certificate.
If not in English: An informal translation must be provided.
5. Proof of U.S. Citizen Parent’s Physical Presence in the U.S. Before the Child’s Birth
Examples include:
School transcripts
Employment records
Previous U.S. passports with entry/exit stamps
Military service records
Important: Accurate details and dates of physical presence are essential.
6. Other Relevant Documents (if applicable)
Divorce or death certificates from any previous marriages.
Evidence of the parents’ relationship:
Photos
Letters or communication history
Pre-natal care records
7. Application and Interview
Submission: Application must be submitted online via the eCRBA system or in person at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.
Interview Attendance:
The child and at least one parent must attend the interview.
For children under 16, both parents are usually required to attend.
Note: An appointment is mandatory.
8. Additional Notes
The child must be under 18 years old at the time of application.
Both parents should bring:
All original documents
One photocopy of each document
Translations: All documents not in English must be accompanied by translations (informal is acceptable).
Social Security: A U.S. Social Security number may be required for the child. If not available, an additional form might need to be completed.
